Hold your Horses!

This five-day workshop was conducted through Mountain Home School Charter of Oakhurst, California. The class was open to twelve students from grades three to eight, and the slots filled quickly. I was delighted to discover that there are a lot of horse-crazy kids out there who also have an interest in art!

Through my grade school years I was a student at MHSC, and it was fun to return as a twenty-year-old and still have a purpose there.

Each class day was started with an overview of a new anatomical concept. Here, we learn how the muscles of the legs tie into the lower tendons and ligaments.
On day four, most of our horses have really begun to take shape.
This was my first attempt at teaching, and all of my students were very understanding and patient.
Using reference photos as a valuable tool.

Teaching really is the best way to learn, because you have to figure out how to translate concepts into definable terms.

This head-tilt defines you as an Artist, instead of just an artist. It's required to sculpt properly (kind of like how you have to eat a taco).
We all had a good time, and will take home some pretty ponies to bake in the oven.

Maybe we'll even have another class in the future!

Heartfelt thanks go to all the folks at Mountain Home School who made this workshop possible, Joanie and Barbara in particular.

Thanks to Tom Hurley for the photos!

My own in-class sculpture, in the ugly stage.

He's come a long way since then, and he'd appreciate it if you checked out his page here!
